Last year, Gauteng’s cycling community proved what happens when we ride for a cause bigger than ourselves. Today, that momentum officially took off.

Through a powerful partnership between the Pedal Power Association (PPA), the Cape Town Cycle Tour, and Primedia Cares, entries from Gauteng cyclists participating in the iconic event raised approximately R1.5 million. That collective effort has officially transformed into over 200 brand-new bicycles handed directly to learners and youth across under-resourced communities in Gauteng.

For these young people, a bicycle is far more than just a set of wheels. It represents safe travel, newfound independence, and a significantly faster, reliable route to school and education.

A Milestone Launch in Alexandra

The initiative officially launched on Friday, 4 September 2026, at Realogile High School in Alexandra. The energy on the day captured local media attention, featuring prominently on 947 with Mo Flava, who caught up with Val from the 947 AMP Squad.

Having attended the handover in person, Val described the infectious joy and genuine delight on the kids' faces as they received their new bikes.

"We’re incredibly passionate about this project, but this is just the beginning," says Trish Taylor, Head of Primedia Cares. "Our goal now is to scale up, reach more schools, and put even more life-changing bikes directly into the hands of the young people who need them most."

Moving Forward, Together

This milestone marks just the beginning of what ongoing collaboration between the cycling community, corporate sponsors, and media partners can achieve.

PPA and Primedia Cares extend their deepest gratitude to every cyclist in Gauteng whose pedal power made this vision a reality.

To build on this momentum, the call to action is simple: Gauteng’s cycling community needs to step up once again. By entering the 2027 Cape Town Cycle Tour, every rider directly powers the next phase of this initiative. The goal for 2027 is to go even bigger, expanding our reach to deliver even more bikes to deserving schools and youth organisations across the province. Every entry is not just a race ticket; it is a pledge to transform another young life through the power of two wheels.
