The Pedal Power Association is deeply saddened to report that a foreign cyclist was knocked down on the N2 outside Heidelberg in the direction of Swellendam on Wednesday afternoon, 14 October.

Paramedics declared the cyclist deceased on the scene.

Updates will be provided as further details are confirmed.

Statement from Pedal Power Association CEO, Neil Robinson:

"Pedal Power is saddened and distressed to learn of yet another death on our roads. We don’t know the exact circumstances surrounding the crash, but we will follow up with SAPS to understand the circumstances. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the victim of this tragedy.

Six cyclists have lost their lives in the last 10 months. One life lost is far too many.

To keep cyclists safe, we need improvement across education, law enforcement, NPA resourcing, and court efficiency. Crucially, the punishments handed down to offenders must be far tougher to serve as a true deterrent on our roads."

Drivers are urged to stay vigilant, obey speed limits, and leave at least 1m when passing a cyclist.

Pedal Power Association extends its deepest condolences to the victim's family and friends during this heartbreaking time.
