The route starts at the historic Danger Point lighthouse near Gansbaai where the famous Birkenhead sank. The route tries to follow the trail that the old wagons used almost a century ago to supply paraffin to the lighthouses. It will take you along gravel roads, 2 spoor farm trails and through magnificent fynbos to the L’Agulhas Lighthouse. Route might change due to road works/other unforeseen matters. Part of the route is through privately owned property, only opened to Lighthouse to Lighthouse riders. At the end of the first day you will move closer to the seashore. This last stretch is renowned for its shipwrecks. Be sure not to linger too long because there will be a cut-off time (the incoming tide might be a problem). The lighthouse is in sight and you will cycle at the most southern point of the African continent. Motorbikes and 4x4 vehicles provide backup. There will be 4 water/coke points along the route (every+_ 20km) bananas will be supplied at the halfway point. The overnight stop is at the L’Agulhas caravan park where you can enjoy the campfire and a meal of Potjiekos, pasta etc. (optional) before a well earned rest. No overnight cost involved, limited family or a friend may accompany you. Provide your own overnight luggage. Departure after breakfast (optional) the next morning back to Gansbaai and the descent into Gansbaai with magnificent views over Walker Bay. Total distance: Approximately 180km.Distance might change as we are still exploring the options for the best route that can be enjoyed by all. This is the event for riders to prepare for the bigger races later in the year, don’t miss the opportunity. Bar facilities will be available for a cold beer and other refreshments. Transport will be provided for your luggage to Agulhas and back to Dangerpoint For those who need a comfortable bed, book in at one of many B&B,s in Gansbaai or L’ Agulhas/Struisbaai www.gansbaai.co.za or www.discovercapeagulhas.co.za/www.lekkerslaap.
