IN THE NEWS

COME TRAIN WITH US AT KILLARNEY

Join us every Tuesday afternoon for an hour’s training in a traffic-free environment. Structured training (including warm-up and interval laps) on the Killarney Motor Racing track near Milnerton takes place from 18h00-19h00, with registration from 17h30. Free for PPA members who wear their PPA seeded numbers; R50 for non-members. At the end of the season, the top three attendees will each receive free PPA membership for the next year! Please keep an eye on the PPA Facebook page – if training gets cancelled due to adverse weather, we’ll announce it on Facebook by 15h00 on the day. You can collect your seeded numbers from our offices or at any PPA road event. If you do not have a seeded number, download or print your current PPA membership card for presentation at the track and you will not pay the entry fee.

CAPE TOWN CYCLE TOUR SEEDING BENEFIT

Participation in any PPA event throughout the year and your finishing time will now be given a significant bonus weighing that will apply to your Cycle Tour seeding (note: it’s only for the Cycle Tour and won’t apply to normal event seeding).

It’s never too late to start improving your Cycle Tour seeding. It’s a year-round challenge. In January, there will be three opportunities to improve your seeding before the 2019 Cycle Tour on 10 March. Click on the link  http://www.pedalpower.org.za/events/  for the PPA calendar.

Upcountry members will get the Cycle Tour seeding benefit by participating in road cycling events, in their area that are listed on the Racetec calendar.

The cut-off for entries may have officially closed, but we still have a limited number of entries available to PPA members. Click on the link https://online.entries.co.za/entries/findperson.aspx?pa=se&eid=4432 to enter.

PPA ROAD SOCIAL RIDE

Our road social rides take place every Saturday morning at 06h30 from the PPA office at 9 Hill Park Lane, Mowbray.

Notes on the ride

  • The ride is free of charge and open to everyone including non-members.
  • The riders are split up into groups according to their strengths.  The various groups stay together as there are catch up stops for each group.  A support vehicle with spares will follow the slowest group doing the shortest distance.  No one is left behind.
  • The route is decided on the day depending on the number and strengths of the riders and the weather.
  • The rides are 3+ hours long depending on the route which will include some climbs and will be 50 km or more.  You are free to shorten your ride but there will be no support except for fellow cyclists who may join you.  The faster group will ride a longer unsupported distance.
  • After the ride, a free cup of coffee or cool drink awaits you at The Gear Change, Durban Road, Mowbray.
  • Ride captain:  Roy Andrew

2019 TOKEN DOUBLE90 TEAM CHALLENGE
Entries for this increasingly popular road race with a unique format: a 180 km team time-trial open to both pros and amateur cyclists that starts in the picturesque Free State town of Clarens and takes in the scenic Golden Gate national park, closes 01 February 2019, visit our website www.malutidouble90.co.za for more information on the race and how to enter.

LIGHTHOUSE 2 LIGHTHOUSE MTB EVENT
If you’re looking to ride a unique MTB experience in 2019, then the Lighthouse 2 Lighthouse is the event for you. On 23 & 24 February 2019, enter as a 2-man team or single rider on this two-day event. Hosted by The Lions of Gansbaai, the L2L has been running for 18 years with all proceeds going to charity projects in the Southern Cape. This unique race includes the following:

  • Ride from Danger Point lighthouse (Gansbaai) to the southernmost tip of Africa, the L’ Agulhas lighthouse.
  • Day 1 is 118km with 1200m ascent. The new (improved) route sees riders stick to scenic routes along the beach; through open plains; and through some wooded kloofs. (The sandy, rutted tracks of the past have been ditched for faster off-road tracks).
  • After camping at Cape Agulhas for the Saturday evening (families welcome to join) riders tackle the shorter 93km return route back to Danger Point.

In addition to its own unique community and family-based flavour, The L2L is the ideal training ride for those who have entered endurance events later in the year. If you are training for the Cape Epic, this is the perfect event to fine tune your endurance over non-technical yet challenging terrain. It’s also a step-up for those cyclists who want to tackle a bigger challenge than the one-day Karoo to Coast; or for cyclists looking to tackle ultra-long distance events like the Transbaviaans later in the year.

The L2L is limited to 250 riders though! So commit now; book online, and be able to have a great goal to train for over the holiday period. 23 February 2019 is just a few months away! To enter click on the link https://online.entries.co.za/entries/findperson.aspx?pa=se&eid=4498
