After almost 14 years as General Manager of the organisation, Karin Pohl decided to call it a day and ended her tenure at PPA at the beginning of May. It was a sad moment for everyone when she left the office for the final time.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Karin on behalf of all members, for her hard work and dedication to PPA. Karin had a wealth of information and experience to share when I joined PPA, which allowed me to quickly settle in and be productive. I am sure you will join me in wishing her all the best and success for future endeavours.
Things are happening, but they are happening slowly. BEN and PPA are talking to the city about a communication plan for cycling strategy. Along with Qhubeka and BEN, we are talking to the Western Cape Government about the implementation of a bicycle distribution framework. The wheels of progress are turning slowly, but we have open channels of communication, which is positive.
We are collaborating with the Bicycle Mayor in a number of her initiatives. We are still making Mowbray House and a fleet of bicycles available to her, to teach adults how to ride a bicycle.
Jannis from our office and Sue from BEN run the Bike4All program. They have been busy presenting the Cool Kid on a Bike safety training and cycle awareness course at a number of schools around Cape Town. We’ve donated bicycles to a waste recycling initiative in Gugulethu and in June, they will be handing over bicycles at a school in Riversdale. We are also planning a Mandela Day clean up in Grabouw, clearing an area of the local community for a cycling trail. We’ve donated 2 more bicycles to the Bicycle Bobbies patrolling along the Spruit, bringing the total to 6.
The refurbishment of the Princess Vlei BMX track in the Southern Suburbs will certainly get a lot of kids excited and hopefully they’ll make it their hangout after school and on weekends. BMX is an Olympic sport and a BMX is a great bike to have loads of fun on.
Both the utility bicycle and BMX are available for purchase from the PPA or BEN offices.
June is the last month of the current membership period and we have already published the new rates for 2018/19. I added a Family membership option, which offers a discount to the family unit. Junior members will then also benefit from a 50% entry fee discount at PPA own events, which I hope will make it more affordable for families to participate at our events.
New membership cards should be landing in your email inbox and not your post box anymore. If you prefer a hard copy, you’ll be able to print it from our website.
