In 2016 the Pedal Power Association took the concept of a team time trial challenge of almost 200 km to the Maluti mountains in the heart of the Free State. Teams consist of between 6 and 12 riders and compete in one of three categories: Open (mixed), all-male, or all-female, with the time of the 6th rider across the finish line counting as the team’s official time. Over the past two years, the event has left cyclists breathless – both due to the magnificent scenery in the Golden Gate Reserve, and the tough yet rewarding route.

The 2017 winning team in the open category, Team RoadCover Cycling, sprinted to the finish line at the President Square in Clarens and concluded their race in the incredible time of 4:38:31.

The TOKEN Double90 is a team time trial over 180 km. The event takes place on Saturday 14 April 2018 and is limited to 120 teams.

Teams can enter up to 12 riders per team, with the time of the 6th rider across the finish line being taken as the official team time.

Teams can enter one of four categories:

  • Female
  • Mixed (minimum of 3 riders of the opposite sex in the first 6 finishers)
  • Open (any combination of gender)

The start and finish will be at the President Square, Clarens. The route will take teams from Clarens to Bethlehem to follow the R26 before turning right onto the undulating R714 towards Warden and Eenzaamheid. Thereafter it’s a right turn onto the R57 towards Kestell before the last stretch on the R712 which includes a tough hilly section through the Golden Gate national park. The route is generally undulating, with some steep and tough hills in the last 40 km. This is not a ride for beginners.

  • Start time: 06h30
  • Cut-off at the finish line: 16h30

Teams will start with 30 second intervals and have 9 hours in which to complete the event. A cut-off will be implemented at the Supporter Zone in Kestell (@107 km). Additional cut-offs will also be implemented en route to ensure that all teams will reach the finish line before dark.

Teams will be seeded prior to the event, with the start times published on the official event website.
