Committee

Members of the Pedal Power Association’s Executive Committee are volunteers, either nominated and selected by the membership at the annual general meeting, or co-opted onto the committee. Committee members serve for a period of two years, with six members being selected every alternate year. Once elected, committee members nominate the office bearers. The Executive Committee is responsible for setting the overall strategy and direction of the Association, ensure sound governance of the Association and ensure sound fiscal management of the Association. ExCo members attend one committee meeting per month, as well as sub-committee meetings as required.

Steve Hayward
PPA Chairman 2010-2011

Steve has been the PPA Chairman since 2006, and as such also serves on the Management and Finance sub-committee. Steve is one of PPA’s trustees on the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust, which consists of six PPA representatives and six representatives from Rotary Claremont. He is also involved with the PPA cycling marshals’ portfolio.

He started cycling just over 20 years ago “when I got too fat to continue playing squash and soccer”, and currently owns both a road and mountain bike. His favourite road ride is an early-morning pedal from Edgemead to Noordhoek for coffee, while his favourite off-road ride is in Majick Forest near Durbanville “for the thrilling downhill after the slog to the top!” Steve is currently recuperating from an accident after being taken out by a taxi while on a training ride, breaking his pelvis in a few places. He hopes to be back on a bicycle in the near future.

Elton Davids
PPA Vice-Chairman 2010-2011

Elton started cycling while commuting as a student. This 70 km round trip 0n a fixed cog road bike with back brakes not only saved him some money, but got him nicely fit at the same time. He has completed the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour some 18 times, and his favourite early-morning ride goes around the Peninsula, including Boyes Drive, Smitswinkel, Chapmans Peak and Suikerbossie. His most spectacular crash happened while riding his mountain bike on a steep downhill in the Tokai Plantation. A ride that stands out in his memory is theParis-Brest-Paris (where you have to do 1200km’s in 90hrs) in France, but he had to withdraw about three-quarters of the way into the event due to a throat infection. “I will go back!”

Elton is one of PPA’s trustees on the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust. Elton would like to see more citizens on bicycles and to be more tolerant of one another. He is also specifically involved with the PPA’s development and transformation portfolio.

Robin Hunt-Davis
PPA Treasurer 2010-2011

Robin is a chartered management accountant who started cycling when he was 12 years old to commute to school. He owns both a road and a mountain bike, and rides for pleasure as opposed to competition. His favourite ride is from Hout Bay to Mouille Point and back or game-viewing near the Kruger National Park. “All rides should include at least one coffee stop.” His portfolio goal is to continue to keep the PPA on a sound financial footing. Robin is one of PPA’s trustees on the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust.

Other committee members 2010-2011, in alphabetical order:

David Bellairs
David started cycling in 1988 as a result of a dare by a friend. He rode his first Cycle Tour in 1989 and joined the PPA committee in 1992. He is a past chairman of the Association and is currently employed as the CEO of the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust. While he has completed the Cycle Tour some 15 times, nowadays the Cycle Tour is a day for hard work and little sleep. His favourite ride is over Constantia Nek, Chapmans Peak to Fish Hoek and then back to the southern suburbs via Boyes Drive. “It reminds one of just how lucky we are to be living in this wonderful city called Cape Town. My favourite race is the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour – no event anywhere in the world beats it for its atmosphere and camaraderie.” David’s focuseson ensuring the on-going success of the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour and its contribution back to PPA “to allow us to put money back into the sport of Cycling. I would also like to see PPA spending more time and money on two areas – land access and routes for off road riders and safety initiatives and legislation, lobbying for the rights and protection of commuters and road cyclists.”

Lance Burger
Lance hails from the legal profession and is one of PPA’s trustees on the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust. He started cycling in 1994 when his neighbour in Seattle suggested that he started cycling to work – so he did. He has done the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour more than 15 times, and his favourite ride is to work in the morning – being downhill.

Lance is passionate about promoting commuting and cycling as a means of transportation and seldom uses a car if a bicycle will do – in fact, he and his wife even do the shopping by bicycle (with a little cart), while his kids cycle to school. An incident he’d rather forget? “In Vancouver BC, a pedestrian stepped in front of me, I braked hard. My friend behind me rode into me, knocking me over, and then rode over me.”

Ryan Dingley

Ryan also hails from the legal profession and is one of PPA’s trustees on the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust. Ryan started cycling when he was 12 years old when afamily friend invited him to join him for a social ride. ” I never looked back.” His first bicycle was a blue Raleigh Carlton 10 speed with Stronglight cranks. “It weighed about 25kgs with a cable driven speedometer but was my pride and joy. It was parked in my bedroom and I was always in trouble with my mother for allowing the bike to drip oil on the carpet.”

Ryan has done the Cycle Tour more than 17 times, and is actually one of the faster Exco members on two wheels. His favourite ride is a pedal around peninsula with a group of friends or MTB riding in Tokai or in Knysna. Going forward, Ryan would like to see the PPA help to create more safe cycling awareness (especially for road cyclists) and see more people commuting to work by bike.

Gary Kruger

Gary joined the PPA committee in September 2009. He is a fairly recent convert to cycling, having started cycling in 2006 to relax   and get fit after starting his own business in 2002. Gary is passionate about off-road cycling, and his favourite playground is the Tokai plantation (which is right on his doorstep). “If I have to single out a ride, it was probably following the Tour de France route in 2009,” Gary said. Gary’s dream is to get a continuous MTB track approved around the Peninsula, from Cape Point to Table Mountain and he has been driving this project since joining the Exco. It’s a slow process, but – keep fingers crossed…

Iain McIntoshIain McIntosh

Iain has been on the PPA Exco since 2009. He assists with junior cycling, as well as cycling development.

Riaan MeintjesRiaan Meintjes

Riaan also hails from the legal profession and is one of PPA’s trustees on the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust. He has been on the PPA Exco since 2007. He started cycling as a child “because it was the only way to have my own set of wheels and because I just loved cycling” and has a few bikes and/or frames parked in the garage, off-road cycling being his passion. “Favourite ride? It must be the Harkerville trails for the indigenous forest, flowing singletrack and stunning coastline.” Riaan heads up the PPA’s disciplinary sub-committee and aims “to help everyone to ride safely and have fun by obeying the rules – they are there to ensure your protection and enjoyment.”

Peter Wheeler
Peter has been on the Executive Committee for over 13 years. He started cycling some 30 years ago when he wanted to do the Cycle Tour, and is passionate about the racing side of cycling. His favourite ride is a hilly, tough ride that would incorporate climbs like Constantia Nek, Chapmans Peak and Suikerbossie.
