From 1 January 2008, all cyclists participating in cycling events in South Africa will be required to have one of the following licences to be able to participate in an event. This is in accordance with new regulations that have been instituted by the governing body of cycling in the country, Cycling South Africa.

The four categories of licenses are as follows.

a)     Elite (Full or Racing) licence
These are issued to cyclists who are members of Clubs (in addition to CSA affiliates) and who apply through their clubs to Cycling South Africa for this level of licence.

The license is valid for 1 year and expires annually at the end of December.

This license is required for participation at provincial or national championships. Being the highest form of license issued in South Africa, this license can also be used for participation at the PPA road leagues, at all MTB events and at all track cycling events (provided the cyclist has indicated that those other disciplines be “loaded” onto his/her license).

A license card is issued.

b)     Cyclosport Licence
These licenses are issued to cyclists who are members of Clubs or Associations affiliated to CSA (like the PPA) and who make application through their clubs to Cycling South Africa for this level of licence.

The license is valid for 1 year and expires annually at the end of December. This license is the minimum level of license required for cyclists who want to participate in the PPA road leagues. Cyclosport licenses are multi-disciplinary, i.e. can also be used at MTB or track events (other than provincials or nationals). A license card is issued.

A cyclosport license can be used to be seeded in the age category groups for all seeding series events as well as the Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tour, other than the Powerade Dome to Dome, which is an Africa Tour event, or the invitation field for the Giro del Capo. For these latter two events, full racing (elite) licenses are required.

All paid-up PPA members automatically hold a Cyclosport license.

If you are a CSA member but not a PPA member, you can also participate in a PPA funride without having to take out any additional licenses, but please note that you will be required to start with the non-seeded groups, as seeding at PPA events is a specific benefit of PPA membership. Visiting riders can enquire about short-term PPA membership if they wish to start in the PPA seeded groups.

c)     One-day licence
These are issued to cyclists who are not members of a club or association affiliated to Cycling South Africa and who wish to participate in any timed event, anywhere in the country. This licence is issued for use at ONE (specific) EVENT ONLY.

This day licenses costs R35, and includes a back number in the unseeded start group.

Note: Seeding is a specific benefit of PPA membership, which means at PPA road or MTB funrides, PPA members will be seeded ahead of non-members.
