New all-female MTB funride: Entries close at noon

Entries for the PPA “Tread Lightly” MTB on Saturday 19 May 2012 close at noon on Monday 14 May. This great new MTB event offers three routes on the Backsberg Wine Estate near Paarl. While the two longer routes are open to female cyclists only, the short 5km route is even also open to male cyclists, provided they are accompanied by a kid at all times ;-)

Cycleway Poll

Discussions with Transnet concerning the future of the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe have been ongoing for years, and even the Western Cape minister of tourism seems to be on the verge of giving up hope to save this tourism icon. Some lobby for the repair of the railway line that was damaged during the 2006 floods; others think it should become a cycling track. What do you think?  Read more…

Where does the money go?

The PPA office is at present evaluating new project funding applications received for the new funding year commencing in July 2012.”We have received over 55 applications for project funding for 2012/2013,” said PPA General Manager, Karin Pohl. “These include some really exciting applications around mountain biking, BMX and commuting.”

New PPA-sponsored MTB trails and BMX open in Grabouw

Over ninety eager MTB bikers took advantage of the launch special and took to the mountains to try out the various trails at the official opening of the Paul Cluver/Thandi MTB trails on Sunday April. The trails were funded by PPA and Wine to Whales and included great new single-track sections including Tthe Switch Backs, Up & Downs, Pofadder, Geelslang and Huppelland.

New MTB seeding; seeding changes

The good news is: After years of talking about it, we are finally able to split road and MTB seeding and from now on, our members will have a different road and MTB PPA seeded number. To set the ball rolling and to test the new system, we are now issuing new MTB ‘back numbers’ to all paid-up PPA members who participate in MTB events on the PPA calendar; the intention being to replace the MTB back numbers with permanent PPA seeded frame numbers from 2012.

PPA gives back to the Milnerton community

The Pedal Power Association ‘gave back’ to the community when committee and staff members of the Association, together with local Traffic Officers, a PPA cycling marshal  and friends of the PPA, spent a few chilly hours on Thursday 14 July to hand bicycle helmets and lights to commuters from the Danoon informal settlement.

PPA delights commuters in Sun Valley

Earlier this morning, cycling commuters from the Masiphumelele informal settlements were quite apprehensive when they were pulled off the road near the Sun Valley four-way intersection, but their apprehension soon turned to delight when the Pedal Power Association handed them free cycling helmets, while at the same time fitting red reflecting lights to their bicycles.

PPA allocates R1 850 000 to project funding

Cape Town, 1 July 2011:- The Pedal Power Association (PPA) is delighted to announce allocating some R1 850 000 to support 38 cycling-related projects over the next year, bringing the funding spent on cycling projects over the last four years to a total of just under R7 million. In this way, the Association has recently supported some 120 specific cycling-related projects.
