DURBANVILLE: Burry Stander (Team Specialized) is wearing pink after winning the second stage of the 2010 Pick n Pay Cape Argus Giro del Capo. He narrowly beat David George (Safindit.co.za) and Kevin Evans (MTN Energade), completing the 143km stage in 3:21,53.
“After the recent high temperatures, we were very fortunate today with temperatures in the low 20’s, with the rain holding off until the front bunch reached the finish line,” said Race Director Karin Pohl. “We are also always thankful when there are no medical emergencies on the day.”
The action started soon after the leading Commissaire dropped the flag, with several attacks within the first 10km on Adderley Road. The attacks were soon neutralized, with the first successful breakaway having to wait until the King of the Mountain Prime at the top of Vissershok on the first lap.
Riders then completed two more laps of 47km, with Evans and Stander remaining amongst the top five at every King of the Mountain Prime.
Thursday’s third stage over 171km starts at 09h30 in Market Street, Paarl. Riders will pedal towards Franschhoek, with the first Pickfords Points Prime (27km) taking place halfway down the Franschhoek Main Road. This is followed by the first Powerade King of the Mountain Prime (35km) at the top of Franschhoek Pass.
The second Points Prime will take place in Main Road, Villiersdorp (62km), whereafter the race will turn left near Worcester to pedal through Rawsonville. The second KOM will take place at the top of Old Dutoitskloof Pass (152km), before the fast descent to the finish in Market Street, Paarl.
Both Franschhoek and Dutoitskloof Pass will be closed to traffic while the Giro del Capo moves through.
The last stage, Friday’s individual hill climb time trial from Camps Bay to the top of Signal Hill starts at 09h30.
